FERAL Animal Survival Deer Guide: How to Start, Survive and Grow
What it's like to play as a deer in FERAL Animal Survival: how deer start, how to find food and water as prey, and how to grow from baby to adult and elder.
Quick answer
Playing a deer in FERAL Animal Survival means playing one of the game's two starters: a prey animal that spawns as a wobbly baby, eats and drinks to grow through the baby, juvenile, adult and elder stages, and shares the valley with wolf players who get a 'Hunt a deer' quest. Deer can fight back, and other deer players do group up.
- Deer is one of the two starting animals. Pick it in the create menu, give it a name, and you start life as a baby.
- The core loop is simple: find food and water, complete growth quests such as drinking, and watch your growth percentage climb toward adult.
- You sit on the prey side of the valley's hunter-or-prey split, so wolf encounters are a normal part of deer life, not bad luck.
- If your deer is killed, you go back to being a baby, so staying alive is what protects the growth you have earned.

Starting as a deer
The deer is one of FERAL Animal Survival's two starting animals on Roblox, from developer Elasmonian Games. The official description puts it plainly: you can "be born as a tiny wolf or a wobbly deer," so picking the deer puts you on the herbivore side of the valley from your first minute. If you are still weighing the two options, the starter animals guide breaks down the choice.
Your deer is created through the create menu, where you can also name your animal before it spawns. Every animal in the game has its own baby model, so your first moments are genuinely small and shaky rather than a scaled-down adult. The same menu lists more animals you can progress toward later, including more herbivores such as the white-tailed deer and elk alongside carnivores and omnivores; the full roster lives in the all animals overview.
The survival loop: food, water and the valley
A deer's day has one shape: find food and water, and grow from baby to adult in the wild. The map gives that loop room to breathe, with rivers, forests, a hidden lake and the deep gorge to explore. The map guide covers the layout, while the food guide and water guide cover the searching itself.
Two tools make that searching easier:
- Scent. Animals have a scent ability that shows where different things are, which matters when you are a hungry baby deer with no idea where the next meal is.
- Swimming. Deer can swim, and once you dive underwater, Q brings you up and E takes you down.
Quests tie the loop to growth: animals have quests that reward growth, and drinking is one of them. Watch the water's trade-off, though. Water can be a safer place than land when trouble starts, but it is not empty — alligators are present in rivers, so the same riverbank where you complete a drinking quest can hold something with teeth.
How deer grow from baby to elder
Growth is the point of the loop. It is tied to survival actions such as eating and drinking, and progress toward the next stage is shown as a percentage — one player watched their number sit at 43% on the way to adult. Animals climb through named life stages:
The growth stage ladder
- 1
Baby
Where every deer starts, and restarts after death.
- 2
Teenager / juvenile
The mid-growth stage between baby and adult.
- 3
Adult
Fully grown.
- 4
Elder
The stage after adult.
This ladder is the game-wide growth system, and deer follow the same baby-to-adult loop the official description promises. The growth stages guide explains the system in depth, how to grow adult focuses on the push to adulthood, and the elder stage guide covers what comes after.
Living as prey, and what death costs
The game frames the whole valley in one line: every animal is either THE HUNTER or THE PREY. Deer sit on the prey side, and the game makes sure you notice. Wolf players get an explicit "Hunt a deer" quest, so a wolf walking toward you is often literally working through its quest list rather than passing by. The predators and prey guide maps out who to watch for, the escape guide covers getting away once something has picked you, and the wolf guide shows the same valley from the other side of the hunt.
Getting caught is expensive. When your animal dies, you are back to being a baby — that is exactly what one player found after another player's animal killed theirs, and the reset undoes the growth you have banked. The baby survival guide matters, then, even if you plan to sprint through the early stages.
A deer is not defenseless
Being prey does not mean being harmless. In one observed encounter, a wolf tried to lunge at a juvenile deer and the deer attacked back, ramming into the wolf again and again; the juvenile then slipped into the water, and the wolf was left wondering how to grab it.
Treat that as what it is: one recorded fight, not a promise that deer win battles and not a set of damage values. What it does show is that deer have a working attack, and that reaching water can complicate a pursuer's job — the wolf could not lunge on cooldown and was left asking whether there was any way to grab the juvenile once it reached the water.
Other deer players
In one populated-server sighting, a wolf player ran into "so many deer" in a single area — deer players do group up. A crowd is good company for a prey animal, and it also concentrates exactly what hunting quests are looking for — in that same sighting, the wolf player picked a target out of the group. Company and attention tend to arrive together.
Your first life as a deer
Checklist
- Pick the deer and name it
The deer is one of the two starters, and the create menu lets you name your animal before you spawn.
- Find food and water early
The loop is eat, drink and grow. The scent ability shows where different things are while you search.
- Drink to complete growth quests
Quests such as drinking reward growth, so build them into your route along the rivers and forests.
- Watch your growth percentage
Progress toward adult shows as a percentage, so you can tell when a surviving session is paying off.
- Give wolves space
Deer are prey and wolves get a Hunt a deer quest. If one tests you anyway, deer can attack back: a juvenile deer once rammed a wolf again and again, then slipped into the water out of the wolf's grab.
- Be careful in rivers
Alligators are present in rivers. Water can be safer than land, but check what lives in it before you swim.
If you are completely new to the game, the beginner guide covers the basics that apply to every animal before you settle into deer life.
