FERAL Animal Survival Beginner Guide: How to Start Your First Life and Grow to Adult
How to start your first life in FERAL Animal Survival and keep your baby fed, watered and growing: the Den Hollow tutorial, GROWTH milestones from baby to teen to adult, QUICK quests, Amber, and your first LUNGE hunt.
Every life in FERAL Animal Survival starts the same way: you are born as a baby — the starters are the wolf and the deer — in a wild valley where every animal is either the hunter or the prey, and your first job is to find food and water while GROWTH carries you from baby toward adult. The opening tutorial teaches the exact loop you will repeat for the rest of the game: kill, eat, grow.
Quick answer
You start every life as a baby — a wolf or a deer — with a near-empty GROWTH meter, and you grow by eating, drinking and finishing quests: at 34% GROWTH a wolf becomes a teen and unlocks LUNGE, and at 67% it reaches adult.
- A new wolf pup starts in Den Hollow, in Winter, at 6% GROWTH.
- Eating is what raises GROWTH — feeding your baby is how it grows.
- QUICK quests pay Amber for the errands you already run: drinking, traveling, hunting.
- Dying sends you back to baby: GROWTH resets to 1% and your ability relocks.
Your first life in four moves:
- Pick a starter and name it. The wolf and the deer are the advertised starters, and the create menu lets you name your animal. If you are torn between them, our starter animals guide covers both.
- Play the tutorial. A first wolf life opens in Den Hollow with three steps — bite the mouse, eat it, grow toward your ability unlock.
- Eat, drink and quest as you roam. Food and water keep a baby alive, and QUICK quests pay Amber for exactly those errands.
- Chase the milestones. Push GROWTH up to teen, then adult — the exact thresholds are just below.

The video below walks through a complete first wolf life — the Den Hollow tutorial, the road to teen at 34%, a first LUNGE hunt, and the reset that follows a death — so you can watch the whole loop before playing it:
Your first minutes: the Den Hollow tutorial
A brand-new wolf pup spawns in Den Hollow, in Winter, at 6% GROWTH, with a three-step tutorial on screen:
Checklist
- Bite the mouse
Step 1/3 — “CLICK TO BITE THE MOUSE!” appears over a highlighted mouse, with “WASD to move” shown on screen.
- Eat your kill
Step 2/3 — eating the mouse raises GROWTH; an EATING bar fills while you feed, and the meter moved from 7% to 12% during the tutorial.
- Grow to unlock your ability
Step 3/3 — “GROW UP TO UNLOCK YOUR ABILITY!” tracks your progress toward 34%, where a wolf becomes a teen and unlocks LUNGE.
Clear the mouse and the game states your destination itself: “YOU'RE GROWING! At 34% you grow into a teen and unlock your ability, LUNGE: jump at your prey and bite on!” The habit worth building is right there in step two — eating is what raises GROWTH, so a fed baby is a growing baby. This walkthrough is the wolf pup's first life; deer players also begin as a baby with the same eat-drink-grow job. If you want to go deeper on either starter, our wolf guide and deer guide cover them individually.
How GROWTH works: baby, teen, adult, elder
Growth is one percentage meter, and the wolf's milestones are marked clearly along the way:
| Stage | GROWTH (observed on the wolf) | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Baby | 6% at the start of a first life | Tutorial runs bite → eat → grow; the F ability slot carries a “34% GROWTH” lock marker |
| Teen | 34% | LUNGE unlocks on the F key and the goal banner switches to “GROW INTO AN ADULT” |
| Adult | 67% | The teen banner's bar counts toward this adult threshold; adults are told to keep going to elder |
The lock is visible on the F key slot itself — until you hit 34%, it stays marked “34% GROWTH”. Cross the threshold and you become a teen, LUNGE unlocks, and a prompt invites you to test it: “TRY YOUR ABILITY: LUNGE! Get close to a deer and press F to leap on it!” The goal banner then switches to “GROW INTO AN ADULT”; one run showed that bar at 39/67%, which pins the adult threshold at 67%. Treat 34% and 67% as the wolf's observed milestones rather than promises for every species — other animals were not part of that run.
Adult is not the ceiling, either. The game moves the goalposts once more with messages like “Your otter is an adult. Keep going to be an elder.” — elder is the stage waiting beyond adult, and our elder stage guide explains it. Growth can speed up along the way too: one player reported a hunt handing out a growth boost they described as growing “50% faster”. Growth boosts are covered in more detail here.
Death undoes all of it. When your animal dies — for example, killed by another player's animal — the next life starts over: GROWTH resets to 1%, the goal banner reverts to “GROW INTO A TEEN 1/34%”, and the F ability locks again behind the same 34% gate. You restart the whole growth process on the new life; the revive guide picks up from there, and the grow-to-adult guide focuses on making the climb faster.
Keeping a baby fed and watered
Every animal in FERAL has to find food and water, and babies do it with their ability still locked — a wolf pup only unlocks LUNGE at 34%, so the early game is about staying fed and steering clear of fights, not winning them. One player summed up the whole loop as “each drink and do quest to grow”: drink at the rivers and marshes, eat for your diet — the game sorts animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores — and let QUICK quests turn those errands into Amber and growth. The tutorial mouse is the baby-sized version of hunting: small prey, kill, eat.
Where exactly to look matters, so our food guide and water guide go deeper on tracking down both, and the baby survival guide focuses on this fragile stage.
QUICK quests and Amber
The QUESTS panel has QUICK and DAILY tabs, and the QUICK tab reads like a beginner's to-do list:
| QUICK task | Amber | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Drink at Tall Marsh | +36 | Drink once at a named spot on the map |
| Drink 20 water | +18 | Rack up 20 drinks |
| Travel 600 m | +34 | Cover ground, with live distance progress shown |
| FINISH ALL 3 | +39 | Bonus for clearing the whole set above |
Exploration pays separately: discovering a new area pops a +20 Amber notification — “ALDER CREEK DISCOVERED!” and “DEN HOLLOW DISCOVERED!” both appeared during one run — and your Amber total sits in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Treat the exact tasks and amounts above as examples rather than a fixed pay table; the task list can rotate between sessions. Our Amber guide covers the currency side in depth.
Hunting as a teen: LUNGE in practice
Everything changes at 34%. LUNGE is your first real weapon, and the unlock prompt teaches the basics: get close to prey and press F to leap on it. Latching on works like this — the wolf approaches prey (a white-tailed deer, for example), presses F to lunge, and a “[F] TO LET GO” prompt appears while damage numbers pop over the deer.
Know the costs before your first fight. Releasing leaves you crouched while F counts down a numeric cooldown (it showed 18 in the observed hunt), and hanging onto prey draws on your own health — the wolf let go at 40/46, with a red segment showing on its health bar. Start fights healthy and expect downtime between attempts. The quests line up with this stage too: “Hunt a deer” pays +36 Amber, and one quest set read “hunt a deer, rest for 75 seconds, hunt a herbivore,” building rest straight into the hunting rhythm. Our hunting guide goes deeper on the chase.
Picking your animal
FERAL advertises births as “a tiny wolf or a wobbly deer,” and those two are the starters — but the create menu holds far more:
- Carnivores: such as the river otter, cougar, bald eagle, python, alligator and tiger
- Herbivores: such as the porcupine, white-tailed deer, elk, Asian elephant, bison and rhino
- Omnivores: such as the red fox and grizzly bear
Whichever you pick, you can name your animal, and every species has a baby model — so every life starts small, whatever the adult turns into. The all animals list rounds up the full roster.
Getting around — and staying alive
The valley itself is half the challenge. It spans rivers, forests, a hidden lake and the deep gorge, and in it every animal is either the hunter or the prey — as a baby, you are firmly on the menu, and losing a fight means losing the whole growth run to the death reset described above. The game gives you tools to find things before they find you:
Tips
Dive with Q and E
You can swim, and underwater the dive controls are Q to go up and E to go down.
Follow scent
The scent feature shows where different things are, which helps you find what your quests and survival call for.
Night vision highlights players
Night vision highlights other players inside the map, so you can spot company before it spots you.
Read territories before you wander
The map marks contested versus uncontested territories and can be zoomed — worth a glance before exploring as a baby.
Our map guide helps you learn the valley, and the escaping predators guide covers getting out alive when something bigger takes an interest.
Where to go from here
Once the first loop feels comfortable — drink, eat, quest, hunt — the deeper guides take over: the growth stages guide explains what teen, adult and elder mean for your animal, and predators and prey maps out who chases whom in the valley.
