FERAL Animal Survival Wolf Guide: How the Wolf Starts, Grows, Hunts and Survives
A wolf's full loop in FERAL Animal Survival: the Den Hollow pup tutorial, GROWTH stages at 34% and 67%, LUNGE hunting with its cooldown and health cost, what death resets, quests that pay Amber, packs and territories, and the Arctic Wolf game pass.
Quick answer
Playing the wolf in FERAL Animal Survival means climbing one GROWTH meter through three stages — you spawn as a pup in Den Hollow at 6%, become a teen at 34% (your LUNGE ability unlocks on F) and reach adult at 67% — hunting by lunging onto deer and latching on, with quests and area discovery paying Amber along the way. If you die, you respawn as a baby at 1% GROWTH with LUNGE locked again; your Amber balance is kept.
- The wolf is one of the game's two starters (the other is the deer); a new pup begins in Den Hollow in winter.
- Wolf thresholds: 34% GROWTH = teen + LUNGE unlock. 67% GROWTH = adult.
- LUNGE (F) leaps onto prey and deals damage while latched, then goes on a cooldown and costs your wolf some health.
The wolf is one of the two animals you can be born as in FERAL Animal Survival — the other is a wobbly deer — and it plays the predator's role in a valley where, in the game's own words, every animal is either THE HUNTER or THE PREY. A wolf's run has a clear shape: start tiny, feed to push your GROWTH meter upward, unlock your signature LUNGE attack as a teen, hunt deer on the way to adult, and try not to die — because death sends you back to the beginning of the curve. If you're brand new to the game, the beginner guide covers what every animal shares, and the starter animals page compares your two starting choices.

Your first minutes as a wolf pup
A new pup wakes up in DEN HOLLOW in winter with GROWTH at 6% and a three-step tutorial waiting:
- Bite the mouse. Step 1 highlights a mouse with "CLICK TO BITE THE MOUSE!" and shows "WASD to move" underneath.
- Eat it. Step 2 is eating the mouse you just killed — in the captured tutorial, that EATING progress alone carried GROWTH from 7% to 12%.
- Watch the growth bar. Step 3 shows "GROW UP TO UNLOCK YOUR ABILITY!" with a progress bar counted in percent, while a popup explains the first milestone: "YOU'RE GROWING! At 34% you grow into a teen and unlock your ability, LUNGE: jump at your prey and bite on!"
From there, the loop is the one the game advertises for every animal: find food and water, and grow from baby to adult while exploring rivers, forests, a hidden lake and the deep gorge. The how to find food and how to find water guides cover the survival basics — for a wolf, that mostly means hunting.
How wolf growth works: 34% teen, 67% adult
Growth is a single percentage meter, and the wolf's thresholds are fixed:
| Stage | GROWTH | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Baby pup | Starts at 6% | You begin in Den Hollow; the F ability slot is locked with a "34% GROWTH" marker on it. |
| Teen | 34% | LUNGE unlocks, with a popup walking you in: "TRY YOUR ABILITY: LUNGE! Get close to a deer and press F to leap on it!" |
| Adult | 67% | The teen goal banner reads "GROW INTO AN ADULT" and counts toward 67 (seen at 39/67% in the recorded session). |
The meter moves when you feed — eating one tutorial mouse took it from 7% to 12% — and boosts help too: one recorded session had a visible growth boost reading "growing 50% faster" (the growth boosts guide covers that system). Growth is also where the game keeps its stakes: every percentage you gain can be lost again in one death, as the sections below explain. For how growth works across the whole roster, see the growth stages guide, and the how to grow adult page focuses on reaching that 67% milestone.
Hunting with LUNGE
At 34% your pup becomes a teen and hunting changes from biting mice to real predation. The wolf's ability is LUNGE, and the game's own tip tells you how to use it: "Get close to a deer and press F to leap on it!"
The recorded hunts ran like this: approach a deer, press F, and the wolf leaps and latches on. While latched, a "[F] TO LET GO" prompt appears and damage numbers pop over the deer — a 4 was visible on one hit. Press F again to release.
Two costs matter:
- Cooldown. Letting go leaves the wolf crouched with F on a numeric cooldown (18 in the observed hunt), so a lunge that misses or loses its prey isn't instantly repeatable.
- Your own health. Hunting isn't free for the hunter either — after that same hunt, the wolf's health bar showed 40/46 with a red segment marking what the fight cost.
So treat lunges as trades rather than free hits, and go in with health to spare. The hunting guide goes deeper on hunting in general, and since deer are the wolf's classic target — several quests literally ask you to hunt one — the deer guide covers the prey's side of the encounter.
What happens when your wolf dies
Death is a full reset, and it's worth understanding before it happens to you. When a wolf is killed, the screen turns grayscale and the HUD disappears. The death settlement screen reportedly offers a green "REVIVE (FREE)" button with a -40% growth penalty noted beside it.
What the session's post-revive frames confirm, at a glance:
| What changes | After death |
|---|---|
| GROWTH | Resets to 1% — the wolf comes back as a baby, goal banner back at "GROW INTO A TEEN 1/34%" |
| LUNGE (F) | Locked again |
| Amber | Kept — the balance (65 at the time) carried straight through the death |
The practical upshot: dying costs you the entire climb back up the meter, but never your currency, so Amber you've banked stays safe to spend. The revive guide covers revival in detail, the baby survival page helps with the vulnerable stage you're returned to, and the how to escape predators guide is the natural companion read for staying alive longer.
Quests and Amber while you grow
The QUESTS panel has QUICK and DAILY tabs, and it pays Amber for things you're doing anyway. Entries displayed during one recorded wolf session:
| Quest entry | Amber |
|---|---|
| Drink at Tall Marsh (0/1) | +36 |
| Drink 20 water (0/20) | +18 |
| Travel 600 m (live distance progress) | +34 |
| FINISH ALL 3 | +39 |
| Hunt a deer (0/1) | +36 |
Rewards are exactly as displayed on those entries during that session. Wolf-specific chains appear too — one visible quest line read "Hunt a deer, rest for 75 seconds, hunt a herbivore".
Exploration pays separately: discovering new areas pops a "+20 Amber" notification ("ALDER CREEK DISCOVERED!" and "DEN HOLLOW DISCOVERED!" both appeared during the session). For where Amber comes from and what it buys, see how to get amber and amber uses — and if the developer has shared codes, the codes page tracks the current list.
The world: territories, packs, scent and night vision
The minimap and location banner name the areas you'll cross as a wolf:
| Area | What the banner shows |
|---|---|
| DEN HOLLOW | Your starting area |
| ALDER CREEK | A named area on the route |
| TALL MARSH | A quest target in the session |
| EAST DEN HOLLOW | "GOJO'S PACK - CONTESTED!" |
| NE MUDLANDS | "IGNIS'S PACK - JOIN A PACK TO TAKE" |
Those last two labels show the territory system at work: other wolves' packs hold territories that players can contest or join to take. The PACKS button (paw icon) on the left-side menu is where pack business lives, next to MENU (H), SHOP (Amber icon) and REWARDS (gift icon with a red notification dot).
The world also runs on its own clock — the session's banner showed "DAY 18 - SUMMER" alongside an in-world time of day. Two tools make navigation easier: scent shows the wolf where different things are, and night vision highlights players on the map. The map page covers the valley as a whole, the deep gorge location page covers the gorge from the game's description, and the predators and prey guide covers the other side of that hunter-or-prey split.
A real wolf session, pup to reset
To see the systems working together, here is how one creator's recorded wolf run actually played out. It's one player's session — outcomes are examples, not guaranteed rates:
- The player joined a pack called "the hunters", and pack members could be seen and joined up with out in the world.
- As a teen, the wolf hunted a baby deer by lunging onto it and finished the kill.
- The next target, a juvenile deer, fought back — ramming the wolf instead of going down quietly.
- Later, an otter killed the wolf outright, and the player was back to a baby again, starting the growth climb over.
It's a compact demonstration of everything above: prey fights back even when it's a herbivore, an otter ended a teen wolf's run, and death restarts the growth curve while your banked Amber stays yours. Grow first, hunt carefully, and treat every encounter as a risk.
The Arctic Wolf game pass
The free starter isn't the only wolf. An "Arctic Wolf 🐺" game pass was listed at R$ 99 in a November 2026 snapshot of the game's pass list (shown as added 11/01/26), alongside passes like 5th SLOT (R$ 99), 6th SLOT (R$ 199) and 2x Amber (R$ 299). That listing is a third-party snapshot rather than a live shop read, so check the in-game store for current prices and availability before buying. The gamepass animals page explains what passes add to the roster.
Whether you're biting your first mouse in Den Hollow or pushing through contested territory at 67%, the wolf plays out exactly the way the game frames it: every animal is either THE HUNTER or THE PREY — and as a wolf, you're usually the hunter, right up until a ramming deer, an otter or a guarded pack border says otherwise.
