FERAL Animal Survival Hunting Guide: How to Find and Kill Prey as a Predator
How to hunt as a predator in FERAL Animal Survival: unlock LUNGE at 34% growth, track prey with scent and night vision, latch on with F, and survive prey that fight back.
Quick answer
Find prey with scent or night vision, get close, and press F to LUNGE: your predator leaps onto the prey and latches on while damage numbers pop over it. Press F again to let go. LUNGE unlocks at 34% growth, when your animal grows into a teen.
- Below 34% growth the F slot sits locked behind a '34% GROWTH' marker, so young pups hunt with the tutorial's simple click-to-bite.
- While latched, a '[F] TO LET GO' prompt shows. Releasing puts F on a numeric cooldown, and your own health comes back partially depleted after a latch.
- Attacks can apply bleed, so wounded prey keep taking damage and can bleed out even after you let go.
- Prey fight back, and dying resets your growth to 1% - watch your own health, not just the prey's.

How a LUNGE hunt actually plays out
Hunting in FERAL Animal Survival is built around one move. Once your predator is a teen with LUNGE unlocked, every hunt follows the same shape: find prey, close the gap, lunge, and hang on while the damage does its work.
A predator hunt, step by step
- 1
Find a target
Scent and night vision show you where animals and other players are on the map. Approach your prey - in one wolf hunt, that was a white-tailed deer.
- 2
Press F to lunge
Get close and press F to leap onto the prey and bite on.
- 3
Latch on and deal damage
While you hang on, a '[F] TO LET GO' prompt appears and damage numbers pop over the prey.
- 4
Let go or finish the kill
Press F to release. You stay crouched, F starts a numeric cooldown, and your own health has dropped. Wounded prey can also bleed out and die after you let go.
Three details are worth knowing before your first real hunt:
- The lunge costs you too. The wolf came out of one verified latched hunt with its own health partially depleted (40/46, with a red segment on the bar), and prey fighting back is a second damage source on top of that.
- The cooldown is real. After you let go, F counts down and cannot be reused - one player mid-hunt ran into exactly that: 'I can't lunge at it because I have a cool down.' Between lunges, your basic click-to-bite still works.
- Bleed can finish a fight for you. Attacks can apply bleed, so a wounded animal keeps taking damage and can bleed out after you release. It is a genuine finisher, though not something every hit applies.

Growing into your hunting ability
New predators cannot hunt like this on day one. A new wolf pup spawns at 6% growth with a three-step tutorial that teaches the loop in miniature: click to bite the highlighted mouse (with 'WASD to move' shown), eat the mouse you killed, then grow up to unlock your real ability. If you are just starting out, the FERAL Animal Survival beginner guide covers that early game in depth.
The real hunting tool arrives at 34% growth. Reaching 34% turns your animal into a teen and unlocks LUNGE, described by the game itself as 'jump at your prey and bite on.' Until then, the F ability slot stays locked behind its '34% GROWTH' marker, and the moment you cross the line a prompt appears: 'TRY YOUR ABILITY: LUNGE! Get close to a deer and press F to leap on it!'
That makes growth your hunting progression: no growth, no lunge. The growth stages guide breaks down every life stage, and how to grow adult covers pushing beyond teen.
Finding prey with scent and night vision
Two tools solve the problem of an empty-looking map, and both pair well with learning the map, since you will regularly be traveling to wherever scent and night vision point you.
Tips
Use scent first
The scent ability shows where different things are on the map. Whenever nothing is in view, use scent and head toward whatever it reveals.
Keep night vision ready
Night vision highlights different players inside the map, so prey and rival predators alike stand out - it is especially good for finding other players you would otherwise walk right past.
Hunt toward your quests
A hunting quest such as 'Hunt a deer 0/1' names a specific prey - going after that animal finishes the quest while you hunt.
Spot rivals early
Night vision highlights other predators too, and they can kill you. Seeing them first is part of hunting safely.
Pack up for bigger prey
You do not have to hunt alone. Players can request to join a pack - one player got accepted into a group called 'the hunters' - and once in, you can see your packmates on the map and run to them. Packs change what you can kill: several animals all going after a single elk brought it down together. The map holds more than deer and wolves, too - big animals like elk and bison are out there, and a pack can take one on as a team. For what hunts what, see predators and prey, and for the full animal list, see all animals.
The risks: retaliation, cooldowns and death
Hunting has a real price. Prey and other animals defend themselves: a juvenile deer rammed the wolf attacking it, and in another session a wolf that tangled with an otter was killed outright. Latching on is not free either - the wolf in one verified hunt released with its own health partially depleted (40/46) - so a hunt can turn against you mid-fight.
Death is the expensive outcome. When you are killed, you revive with growth reset to 1%, your goal reverted to 'GROW INTO A TEEN 1/34%', and your F ability locked again - the death settlement screen reportedly showed a -40% growth penalty note. Your Amber balance is at least kept through death. The revive guide covers coming back from a death, and how to escape predators is worth reading for the other side of the fight: knowing how prey get away tells you what yours will try.
Problems and fixes
My F slot is locked behind a '34% GROWTH' marker
Your animal is still below 34% growth, so its hunting ability has not unlocked
Suggested responseKeep growing - eat your kills, drink, and work through quests until you hit 34% and become a teen. LUNGE unlocks automatically.
I can't lunge again during a hunt
LUNGE goes on a numeric cooldown after you release
Suggested responseKeep fighting with your basic click-to-bite while F counts down instead of waiting helplessly.
The prey is chewing through my health
Prey and other animals fight back - deer ram attackers - and your own health comes back partially depleted after a latch
Suggested responsePress F to let go and break off a hunt that is turning against you. Death resets your growth to 1%.
I died mid-hunt
Retaliation and the partially depleted health you are left with after a latch make hunting genuinely risky
Suggested responseRevive and regrow. You come back at 1% growth with your ability locked, but your Amber is retained.
Hunting quests pay Amber
A hunt is worth more than the meal. The QUESTS panel, with its QUICK and DAILY tabs, includes hunting tasks - 'Hunt a deer 0/1' rewarded +36 Amber. Since the same kill also feeds you and pushes your growth along, checking the panel before you set out turns one hunt into food, growth and Amber at once. For the currency itself, see how to get Amber.
Not every predator hunts the same way
LUNGE is the wolf's answer, but other animals get their own hunting abilities. The hippo's is the crusher bite: hold the bite button to open wide, let go to crunch, and the longer you hold, the harder it bites - and it unlocks at the same 34% growth milestone. Whatever you are playing, learn what your ability actually does before you chase anything down. The hippo guide covers that animal, and the wolf guide covers the classic lunge hunter.
Once your target is down, eat it - eating your kill is step two of the tutorial, and eating is how growth climbs toward your next stage. From there the loop repeats: scent out a target, close in, lunge, and let the cooldown run. If kills are not coming easily, how to find food covers the other ways to keep fed.
